Removals to France: About Nantes

Nantes is a historic city in Brittany and is just 30 miles from the coast. The good news for expats relocating here is that 2004 American’s Times magazine named it the most liveable city on the continent. It was also ranked fourth for innovation (behind Paris, Lyon and Strasbourg).

Three quarters of a million people live in Nantes, which is capital of the Pays de Loire region. It is a very green city, with River Loire running through it and has a port employing more than 26,000 people.

If you enjoy shopping, just head to Place Royale in the centre of Nantes and, near here, you will find Crebillon Street and Orleans Street, which are full of upmarket shops. Another place to go for retail therapy is Decre, which is pedestrianised for shoppers. Talensac is the main market in the city.

The city has several museums, theatres, concert halls and art galleries, including a fine art and also a contemporary art gallery. Other attractions include the Tower of Brittany, the 15th century Cathedral and The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, which also houses the city museum. The science fiction author Jules Verne hailed from here and you can visit his house and museum. But for something different, the Ile de Versailles can be visited by foot or ferry and the whole island is a Japanese garden.
