A Brief History of skiing

The history of skiing goes back hundreds of thousands of years. The oldest ski found to date was discovered in Russia and originated from 6,300 BC– 5,000 BC. Other countries also used skis in ancient times, as primitive rock carvings found in the Nordland Region of Norway depicted a skier with a pole.

Skiing was originally used as a quick and convenient way of getting out and about in the snow, until it became popularised as a sport.

Top Ski Resorts in France

Whether you want a family friendly resort, an up market ski resort, are a beginner looking for gentle slopes, an intermediate skier, or an experienced skier searching for more of a challenge, you will find the ideal ski centre in France.

Each year an average of 400,000 British holiday makers travel to France to ski, so it is a popular destination for a winter break. And you can be sure of a fantastic time as you take to the slopes and marvel at the spectacular scenery.

Here’s our guide to some of the best resorts the country has to offer. It is by no means a comprehensive list as there are many other great ski resorts in France that are well worth a visit, but here’s what we feel are the pick of the best.

Courchevel

Courchevel is a chic internationally renowned resort in the 3 Valleys area, Savoie. It is made up of four different villages at different altitudes and is said to offer some of the best skiing in the Alps. The 1300 resort is lower priced and is popular among families. The 1650 is more French, which many people prefer, and it is less crowded too.

Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes has the second highest ski area and is a great destination for families all year round as it also has some beginners’ slopes. It has the longest (normally open) full on-piste vertical in the world. The Deux Alpes takes its name from the two villages, Mont-de-Lans and Venosc, which can be found at either end of the resort. The nearest airport from here is Grenoble.

Chamonix

Chamonix, in the Rhône-Alpes region, is a well known and popular resort and is also one of the oldest ski resorts in France. It is a great destination to go for some challenging skiing as it has the highest ski area and maximum vertical slope in France. It was the destination of the first ever winter Olympics in 1924.

Flaine
Flaine is a ski resort created in the 1960’s and is situated close to Geneva. It is not a place to go if you are seeking a lively night life, as it is more of a family destination and has some fantastic facilities for the children. It offers lots of variety for the skier and also benefits from some spectacular views.

Avoriaz

Avoriaz is a resort in the Portes du Soleil area. It is one of the largest ski resorts in Europe with as many as 650 km of slopes. The slopes are varied too, from beginners to the more experienced, and you can enjoy some incredible scenery while you ski. The resort is open from December to April.

Valmorel

The pretty ski resort of Valmorel, in Savoie, is mainly aimed at intermediate skiers but is also an ideal choice for beginners too as it has some great gentle slopes. It has six snow sport learning areas as well as some wonderful, varied countryside that attracts off-piste skiers. The resort also benefits from good bars and restaurants.
