If you are moving to Marseille, here is some brief information about the city.

Removals to France: About Marseille

Marseille is the third biggest city in France in terms of population (behind Paris and Lyon) and has more than 1.5 million living in the urban area. The city is situated on the south eastern coast of France, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and is home to the country’s biggest commercial port.

As a result, the port pretty much dominates the Marseille economy and is handy for those of you who require removals to France and shipping to Marseille. However, the city is also a major centre for trade and industry and thousands of businesses are based here, most of which are small businesses.

Marseille is a big tourist destination. It is a lively and energetic city with plenty to offer in the way of entertainment including: nightlife, restaurants, museums and art galleries. It is also a great shopping destination and you can find many high street and individual shops as well as more specialist stores. The area around Noailles tube station is particularly interesting and is where you can find Marché des Capucins, the North African market, and some fascinating Arabic and Indo-Chinese shops.

Certainly, Marseille is a big cultural melting pot, with about 20 per cent of the city’s population born outside of France. North Africans make up the largest minority group and if you like Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian food, you can find it everywhere. Other nationalities that have settled here include Turks, Chinese and Vietnamese.

The city is the 2013 designated European Capital of Culture and, along with the opera house, has many tourist draws. The Palais Longchamp is well worth a visit. The church of Notre Dame de la Garde overlooks the city and offers some superb views. In the oldest part of Marseille, Le Panier, you can find Vieille Charité, which is a fascinating building where you can find displays of North African and Asian art as well as the archaeological museum.

And if you like watching football, of course, the city has the famous football club, Olympique de Marseille.

What Is it Like to Live and Work in Marseille?

Although Marseille lacks the beauty and magic of other cities such as Paris, it has many gems and places of interest.  The old port is a great place for a stroll, where you can visit the daily fish market or sit in one of the cafes that line the waterfront and watch the world go by.

In terms of nightlife, you will find a multitude of restaurants and, if you like fish and seafood, you will find this aplenty in Marseille. There are also some great cafes, bars of all price ranges and nightclubs. But, if you need some winding down time, either at weekends or during the week, Marseille has beaches to relax on.

Living in Marseille

Some 90 per cent of the companies in Marseille are small businesses, although it is also home to large companies including CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container company. Although some parts of the city record a youth unemployment rate of as much as 40 per cent, Marseille has also been named as a dynamic city with more than 7,000 new businesses created since the turn of the century.

In terms of education, the city’s university is Aix-Marseille, which counts three noble prize winners among its graduates. It is a merger of three universities: University of the Mediterranean, University Cézanne and University of Provence and is ranked the 4th best in France. If you are moving to the city with children, there are also international schools in Marseille.

Public Transport in Marseille

Marseille has an underground system, tramway and extensive bus network for local travel and you can also hire bikes for getting out and about the city. For travel further afield, Gare Saint-Charles is the main railway station and connects to many cities including Paris, Strasbourg, Brussels and Geneva. It also has a bus station that connects to various towns and cities including the Aix-au-Province which is just 20 miles from Marseille.

There are ferry services from Marseille to Algeria, Tunisia, Corsica and Sardinia. If you prefer air travel, Marseille Provence Airport provides flights to many international destinations and is the fifth busiest airport in France for passenger traffic.

Removals to France: About Nantes

Nantes is a historic city in Brittany and is just 30 miles from the coast. The good news for expats relocating here is that 2004 American’s Times magazine named it the most liveable city on the continent. It was also ranked fourth for innovation (behind Paris, Lyon and Strasbourg).

Three quarters of a million people live in Nantes, which is capital of the Pays de Loire region. It is a very green city, with River Loire running through it and has a port employing more than 26,000 people.

If you enjoy shopping, just head to Place Royale in the centre of Nantes and, near here, you will find Crebillon Street and Orleans Street, which are full of upmarket shops. Another place to go for retail therapy is Decre, which is pedestrianised for shoppers. Talensac is the main market in the city.

The city has several museums, theatres, concert halls and art galleries, including a fine art and also a contemporary art gallery. Other attractions include the Tower of Brittany, the 15th century Cathedral and The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, which also houses the city museum. The science fiction author Jules Verne hailed from here and you can visit his house and museum. But for something different, the Ile de Versailles can be visited by foot or ferry and the whole island is a Japanese garden.

What is it like to Live and Work in Nantes?

Nantes is an energetic city with a good nightlife and a sizeable student population. Nantes University, founded in 1460, is attended by more than 34,000 students - and as much as ten per cent of these are international students. If you enjoy eating out, you will find plenty of good restaurants here and, as crêpes originated from this region, these are well worth a try. For a special night out, La Cigale has made a name for itself as the county’s most beautiful brasserie and it specialises in seafood.

Living in Nantes

Nantes is an industrial and shipping centre. Biscuits, clothing, bikes, naval equipment and agricultural equipment are manufactured here. It is also home to many hi-tech industries and research laboratories.

The city is just 30 minutes from the Loire and the region has 15000 hectares of vineyards producing mainly Muscadet and Gros Plant. A well known cheese in the area is Fromage du Curé Nantaise.

Public Transport in Nantes

The first organised public bus system originated from Nantes in the first part of the 19th century and it has dozens of bus routes. Nantes also has three tramlines and a bus way and several boat lines. If you buy books of tickets - a ‘carnet’ – this will work out cheaper. You can also rent bikes all over the city.

For travel further afield, there are two railway stations (north and south) for local and long distance travel. You will be able to get the train from Nantes to Paris in a little over two hours. Nantes-Atlantique is an international airport in the south of the city.

Removals to France: About Lille

Lille has a long history in the textile industry. It was one of the first cities to become industrialised in the 19th century and a lot of its wealth (and population) grew on the back of its former textile mills.

Nowadays, Lille has an economy dominated by the services industry and this sector accounts for about 90 per cent of its workforce. The city has a population of one million and is a major tourist destination with museums, interesting buildings and endless shopping opportunities!  The largest shopping centre is Euralille and this can be found between the two railway stations – you can even find a night club here!

Vieux Lille, the old 17th century Flemish heart of the town behind the Opera House, is full of charm and winding, cobbled streets. Rue de la Grande Chaussée has many upmarket stores including big names such as Louis Vuitton and Hermes. Rue Basse is chic and elegant with art galleries and boutiques. The city also boasts one of the world’s largest bookshops, Le Furet du Nord.

Based in northern France near the border with Belgium, Lille is a major tourist destination. Among its many attractions are: the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art (which houses many 20th century works) and the famous 17th century built citadel – an incredible building which required the quarrying of three million stone blocks to construct.

What is It Like to Live and Work in Lille?

Lille is also one of the county’s top student cities so it is a bustling city with a lively nightlife. With several higher educational facilities and more than 110,000 students, it is a very energetic place to live and settle.

As a result, you will find plenty to do here including visiting the city’s restaurants, bars and night clubs. There are also many cafes where you can watch the world go by and tuck in to the delicious patisseries.

If you are eating out, a common dish on the menu is mussels and fries. During the Braderie - an annual festival which falls on the first weekend of September - it has long been a tradition for restaurateurs to throw their diners’ empty mussel shells out the window. The idea is for the restaurant owners to compete with each other to show how many diners they have had!

Thousands of stalls line more than 120 miles of streets during the event, which attracts about 2 million people a year.

Living in Lille

If you are settling in Lille, it takes just 1 hour 20 minutes to get to London by Eurostar and the city is only an hour from Calais, so it is a very handy location to live and work. If you are relocating here, the comparatively short distance is also a great excuse for your friends back in the UK to visit!

And, if you are moving here with family, the good news is you can find international schools in Lille.

Public Transport in Lille

If you need to get out and about via public transport in Lille, the city has buses, cable trains and two underground lines which go from the city centre to the outskirts.

For travel further afield, you can get to Paris in an hour and Brussels in half an hour by train. Lille also has a small international airport.
